Monday, 18 January 2010Action to keep Rochdale moving

Greater Manchester Integrated Transport Authority (GMITA) has stepped in to help passengers and the local community following the withdrawal of a commercial service by bus operator Rossendale.

GMITA has agreed to fund the 435 weekday daytime Rochdale to Buckstones service to help passengers get around the local area. The Saturday service, and some early morning, late afternoon and early evening peak services have been provided with GMITA support since April 2009.

Councillor David White, Chair of the GMITA Bus Network and GMPTE Services Committee, said: "The 435 is a valuable service that local people depend on, which is why we are providing funding for it to continue in the daytime.

"This is an example of how GMITA can step in to help passengers when a bus service is no longer commercially viable, but is still really important in helping local people get around the local area."

The majority of the bus service network in Greater Manchester is run commercially by private operators, such as Rossendale, who decide when and where services run.

GMITA has limited funds, through the taxpayer, to help provide essential bus services that are not provided commercially. In this case, Rossendale will continue to operate this service with funding from GMITA.

The 435 operates every 30 minutes Monday to Saturday in the daytime, and passes through Rochdale, Turf Hill, Burnedge, High Crompton, Shaw, and Buckstones.

Passengers can check their services before by calling Traveline on 0871 200 22 33. Lines are open from 7am to 8pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 8pm at weekends.
