Tuesday, 02 March 2010Still time to comment on plans for a new bus station in Bolton

People are being encouraged to have their say on plans for a new, state-of-the-art bus station in Bolton, before the current consultation ends on the 5 March 2010.

GMPTE, in partnership with Bolton Council, is consulting on proposals to create a brand new bus station next to Bolton railway station, on land bounded by Newport Street and Great Moor Street.

The new bus station would replace the existing facility at Moor Lane and offer improved links between rail and bus services, as well as improved waiting areas, passenger facilities, accessibility, information, and safety and security.

Responses received from the initial consultation will inform ongoing design and development work.

An outline planning application will be submitted to Bolton Council's Planning Department this coming spring and, subject to securing the necessary approvals and permissions, the new facility could be operational by winter 2014/2015.

Councillor Richard Knowles, Chair of Greater Manchester Integrated Transport Authority's Capital Projects Committee, said: "A modern, high quality bus station in Bolton, as outlined in the proposals, will encourage more people to travel by public transport and will help to drive the regeneration of the town centre.

"We are still at an early stage in the design process and the comments we receive now will feed directly into that work, so it is vital that people get in touch and share their views with us before the consultation ends on Friday."

The scheme is being funded through the Greater Manchester Transport Fund and forms an integral part of Bolton Council's town centre regeneration programme.

Councillor John Byrne, Bolton Council's Executive Member for Development and Regeneration, said: "This scheme is of major significance to Bolton and its future economic development so it is very important that people take advantage of the opportunity to have their say.

"The facility will be such a key feature of how people move around the borough and the comments and views received will help shape how it looks and operates."
