Tuesday, 09 March 2010New cycle facilities for Metrolink

Transport leaders have welcomed plans for significant enhancements to cycle facilities across Greater Manchester's current and expanding Metrolink network.

GMPTE, which owns the tram system, has presented plans for improvements to cycle parking and storage facilities on the Metrolink network to Greater Manchester Integrated Transport Authority's (GMITA) Capital Projects Committee.

Under the plans, existing stops on the Eccles and Bury Metrolink lines, stops currently being built as part of the Metrolink extensions and each of the new Park and Ride sites will have cycle parking facilities, where appropriate.

In addition, provision for cycle parking will also be incorporated into the designs of new bus stations across the city region, including stations at Rochdale, Altrincham, Bolton and Wythenshawe.

Councillor Richard Knowles, Chair of the Capital Projects Committee, said: "The proposals are very welcome and reflect our commitment to developing and improving integration on the city region's public transport network.

"Cycling has become increasingly popular in recent years and the provision of enhanced cycle facilities at Metrolink stops, Park and Ride sites and bus stations will open up new opportunities for cyclists to connect with public transport."

Enhancements to cycle provision at existing bus stations will be considered on a case by case basis in conjunction with the relevant local authority, taking into consideration available space, CCTV coverage and appropriate safe access routes.
